Murray and Watson team up with Douglas Motorsport for 2012 Junior seasonPosted: March 3, 2012
Former single seater ace turned succesful driver coach Wayne Douglas has put together the new Ginetta Junior race team named after himself, and is already delighted with their strong driver line-up for the season as the squad continue pre-season testing of their two G40s for 2012.
“This is a fantastic start for us to have such good drivers from the beginning,” Douglas said. “I’ve followed Niall very closely last year and was very impressed with his performance.”
Alongside 2011 frontrunner Murray, Douglas has drafted in young rookie Watson to partner his fellow Irishman.
“We have been working with Andrew through our driver development programme over the past two seasons, and are confident that these two drivers will run very close in the championship right from the off.”
Murray, younger brother of ex-BTCC driver Eoin Murray, ended the 2011 Junior season in fine style by claiming wins at Brands Hatch and Silverstone to end the season fourth in the championship standings in his rookie season for Beacon Motorsport, and the Irish youngster is now fully focused on the championship with his new team for the coming season.
“Without question, I’m back to challenge for the championship!” he said.
“The early part of last season was a little difficult for us as we were with a new team and every circuit was new to me. We did not have the opportunity to test very often, and I found myself having to learn most circuits at the Friday pre-event test which was far from ideal!”
“However I really showed what I was capable of in the second half of the championship with 6 podium finishes in a row. My family race team Murray Motorsport was heavily involved throughout last year and we have brought everything we learnt to Douglas Motorsport for this season.”
Murray’s end-of-season form has given him the new lease of confidence in his racing, and he now feels he is entering the season as one of the men to beat in 2012, and hopes to continue from where he left off last season.
“Coming back with a year’ experience under my belt and a fantastic new team, I am confident that I can be one of the favourites for 2012.”
Fresh from a solid debut Junior performance during his one-off round at Silverstone at the end of 2011, Watson was quick to emphasise his excitement ahead of the new season.
“I’ve been really looking forward to entering this championship for quite some time now. “The experience I have gained from the Irish Championship over the past two seasons is immense and I am confident I can run at the front of the championship from early in the season.”
The rookie from Northern Ireland is also pleased to have race winner Murray as his team-mate for the season.
“Having Niall as my team mate will be a fantastic bonus for me,” he said. “Following Niall’s Progress last year, I am confident that his experience will stand very well to me as I enter the championship as a rookie.”
